Some job seekers fear it and are nervous when speaking to their potential employers on the phone; others go through phone interviews nice and easy. As a matter of fact, many recruiters prefer to hold such an interview before arranging a personal meeting, especially when the applicant is from another country or just from a distant region.

No matter, if you like or dislike phone interviews, the head-hunter’s job during one is to find faults with you, your job is to be prepared and appear to be perfect. In this article you will find some useful tips which will help you to undertake the task wisely and to do well at your phone job interview.

1. Schedule the interview properly, so that you are not busy and do not miss the call. Also make sure you are at a quiet location at the due time – you do not want to be distracted by noise or bustle.

2. Avoid using your cell phone for a job interview. However, it is not a good idea to hold the interview at your current job, if you have any. At work you are paid for working, not for sorting out your personal matters.

3. Thus, your home is the best location for having a job interview. However, make sure you are the one who picks up the phone when your prospective employer is there for you.

4. Dress up in a business like style, just like as if you were having an in-person interview. It will put you into the right mood and give you the needed self-reliance.

5. The things to have on the table during the interview are the following: your resume and cover letter, a sheet of paper and a pen (in case you will need to write something down), a glass of water.

6. During the phone interview keep in mind your aim is to move on to the next step – personal interview with your prospective employer.

7. No need to say that your speech should be comprehensible: not too fast, loud and clear. Hurried stuttering will not make a good impression and consequently will ruin your chances for getting the position wanted.

8. Do not forget to thank the interviewer for his time and for holding the interview. People like when their efforts are appreciated.

Good luck! And smile at your invisible interlocutor – it will give positive emotions to both of you!
